What Is Worth Building From?

Architecture inevitably enters a place already shaped by something: a landscape, a half-finished structure, a way of building, a social habit, a limited budget. What is built will, in turn, be changed by the lives that enter it, becoming the ground for further change.

Across the projects presented in this edition of Focus Romania, this way of beginning takes many forms. In Argeș, a seasonal house grows from the remains of an earlier failed attempt and opens itself to the surrounding trees. In Moldovenești, the contradictions of the existing place become material for the architecture itself, while House in Dumbrava Vlăsiei draws directly from the site, its material conditions and the knowledge of those building it. At a larger scale, Transilvania Residence and Colina Lac explore how housing can belong to both landscape and community. At Swissôtel Poiana Brașov, the surrounding mountain landscape and Transylvania’s material and craft traditions are translated into a contemporary hospitality environment. Studio House evolves with the creative life it contains, while Marie Curie Hospital and The Good Kindergarten turn their attention to care, childhood and imagination.

In the accompanying interviews, several of the architects describe a building culture shaped by discontinuity, interrupted traditions, rapid and uneven development, imported architectural languages and a complicated relationship with shared space. In their work, they return to restraint, adaptability, material intelligence, local knowledge and a resistance to ready-made solutions.

Focus Romania brings together a small selection of contemporary architectural practices responding to very different conditions of place, material, use, memory and social need. Rather than pointing towards a single architectural position, the projects reveal different ways of working with the conditions architecture encounters.
