A Hospital That Doesn’t Feel Like a Hospital

The project for the reconstruction and modernization of the pediatric ward at MBAL Dobrich exemplifies a contemporary approach to hospital design – one that places the patient at the center of the healing process. Implemented as part of the Firefly initiative by the For the Good Foundation, the project transforms the traditional hospital environment into a space that inspires, soothes, and promotes recovery.

The ward spans 11 rooms with a total of 28 hospital beds, organized into three age-specific zones to meet the distinct needs of children at various stages of development. Each room features a unique thematic interior and is furnished with ergonomic, home-like furniture to create a comforting and familiar environment.

The visual concept draws inspiration from the region’s agricultural heritage, fostering a sense of connection to nature and tranquility. The carefully selected color palette and graphic elements are designed to reduce stress and evoke positive emotions in young patients and their caregivers.

In addition to standard medical facilities, the ward includes an intensive care unit, functional service areas, and a dedicated children’s play space to support social interaction – ensuring a comprehensive environment for both physical treatment and psychological well-being.

Funded entirely through charitable donations, this project demonstrates how thoughtful design and social responsibility can redefine the hospital experience – turning a healthcare facility into a place of care, support, and hope.
