A home battery is usually defined by what it does. With STOREY, Propeller Design also considered how a highly technical object should live within the home.
Designed by Propeller Design for Sunology, STOREY brings energy storage into the residential interior through a compact form, restrained expression and an approach centred on usability, repair and disassembly. Awarded the BIG SEE Product Design Award 2026 Grand Prix, the project explores how technology can become more approachable without concealing its function.

Three Questions for Propeller Design Team
Q: What was the defining challenge or opportunity in STOREY, and how did it influence the key design decisions?
A: One of our defining opportunities with the Storey battery was to make a highly technical product minimalist and approachable enough for a residential space, without compromising its raw performance. Designing for disassembly and repair from day one became our North Star. That commitment shaped everything, from our material choices and minimizing redundant components to simplified interfaces and a cleaner, more honest aesthetic.
“Designing for disassembly and repair from day one became our North Star.”

Q: Across your practice, what ideas, values or recurring questions continue to shape the way you work?
A: Sustainability is a core driver for us, but so is making technology and products approachable and human-friendly. Right now, our responsibility is clear: to design functional, sustainable products that are deeply aesthetic, genuinely useful, and purposeful. For us, this is rooted in a Scandinavian design philosophy, creating thoughtful solutions that cut through the noise without unnecessary bells and whistles.

Q: What do you believe is still worth creating in product design today, and what questions do you want your own practice to continue exploring?
A: What’s worth creating today are products that justify their existence with honesty and restraint. As rapid technical advancements push us toward an increasingly automated and complex world, human-centric product design has never been more crucial. Our role as a design firm is to bridge that gap. We want to keep exploring how sustainability and circularity lead to the aesthetic framework, proving that smart engineering, thoughtful materials, and considerate design should live as one.

About STOREY by Sunology
STOREY is a compact home battery designed to store energy from either solar panels or the grid and make it available when it is needed. Rather than adopting the visual language usually associated with technical equipment, its soft form and restrained detailing allow the battery to sit more naturally within a residential interior.
A durable aluminium housing protects the system, while integrated handles make individual units easier to move and stack. Capacity can be expanded by connecting up to four units, and an optional wheel set turns STOREY into a mobile power source with an integrated socket. Its bidirectional AC architecture enables connection to existing solar systems through standard home power sockets.
STOREY works together with the STREAM app, which manages energy production, storage and consumption in real time. The physical and digital parts of the product therefore follow the same design intention: reducing the complexity surrounding domestic energy systems and making their use more direct and understandable.
