ASAS is a well-established architecture office, founded in 1980 and based in two different locations in Norway. Our field of knowledge spans from the in-situ furniture to big master plans. Typical building typologies are housing, health care buildings, schools, kindergartens, and offices, in both private and public sectors. We consist of 26 architects, interior designers, urbanists, and graphic designers in a nonhierarchical system with a social profile. We have a strong reputation as a versatile, playful, and tidy architecture office.

ASAS’ studio always promises our clients and ourselves to deliver precision at all levels in our projects. This is our mantra. A variety in approaches is essential to a successful result. Ideas and concepts are brought to paper by hand as our main working tool. Hand sketching is supplied by testing spatial qualities in physical models before the projects enter the AI and 3D digital world. This gives our team time to investigate the optimal relation between form, space, and function, and to choose the correct strategy for sustainability, systems, and materials. This is valuable architecture, and the purpose of our office.

Founded in 1980 by architects Dag Spangen (b. 1945) and Katrine Aursand (b. 1947), both educated at AHO, ASAS began as a two-person studio at Ådalsbruk, near Edvard Munch’s birthplace, before relocating to Hamar. Rooted in their shared commitment to craft, precision, and social values, the practice has grown to 26 employees by 2026. While no longer partners, Spangen and Aursand remain active, contributing their super-senior expertise. Aursand is particularly known for educational design, while Spangen’s strength lies in healthcare architecture. Today, ASAS is among Norway’s oldest continuously operating architectural offices, maintaining a collaborative and non-hierarchical studio culture focused on form, space, and sustainability.
