It is our pleasure to invite you to the 7th edition of the Italian Design Day 2023 in Slovenia to be held in Ljubljana in the context of BIG Architecture Festival. The event will host a round table with the “Ambassador of Italian Design”, Architect Giulia Fini from the Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture of University of Udine, and Architect Polona Filipič Gorenšek from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ljubljana. The theme will be “Regeneration of Urban Areas” in the framework of the IDD 2023 main theme “The quality that lights up. The energy of design for people and the environment” and BIG Architecture 2023 topic “The Future is watching you.”

Giulia Fini
Architect, she graduated in Architecture at the IUAV University of Venice and obtained a PhD in Urban Projects and Policies at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Politecnico di Milano. She is currently a Tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture (DPIA), University of Udine, where she teaches Urban Planning Techniques and Urban Planning Design. Previously, she was Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU), Politecnico di Milano, where she has been carrying out research and teaching activities since 2010 in the MSc in Urban Planning and Policy Design, and in the MSc in Architecture, Built Environment, Interiors. Giulia Fini is member of the INU (Italian Institute of Urban Planning) Executive Council of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (previously of the Lombardy one) where she is responsible for the activities of the Community for Territorial Regeneration. She is part of the Scientific Committee of Urbanpromo and was part of the INU90 research group. She is editor of the online scientific journal Planum. The Journal of Urbanism (www.planum.net). In her work she combined research and teaching activities with urban design and urban planning experiences at different scales, in addition to a long editorial activity. Among her research and design topics: the spatial and technical dimension of contemporary urban planning, with a focus o: a) planning tools for sustainable development and urban-territorial regeneration; b) planning strategies for sustainable non-metropolitan territory; c) functional settlements and specialized areas (i.e. workplaces, office and directional districts); d) disciplinary tradition of European and Italian urban planning. She is currently part of the working group of the University of Udine for the Territorial Government Plan of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and of the inter-university national research project iNEST Interconnected Nord-Est Innovation Ecosystem.

Polona Filipič Gorenšek
Architect, after graduating from the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, she got a master’s degree at the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands. She is the co-founder of the Studio Stratum architecture office, and in this context she designs various architectural and urban planning projects and studies (some of them nationally and internationally awarded), exhibits and lectures, together with several contributions published at home and abroad. She regularly participates in and leads national and international workshops and is also the author/co-author and curator of several exhibitions on architecture and spatial development. As Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana she leads the courses Urban Design, Architecture and Urban Planning and is the mentor and co-mentor of several diploma and master’s theses. She is a licensed Architect and a member of Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia (ZAPS), where she works in the Women in Architecture group. In addition, she is active in the executive committee of the Association of Primorska Region Architects; member of the Spatial Committee of the Municipality of Ljubljana and of the expert Urban Planning Council of the Municipality of Bled; President of the Commission for Spatial Development of the Municipality of Nova Gorica; Slovenian representative at the international association WCSA. She is the co-founder of the Architecture Center of Slovenia. As a member of the expert committee of the Architecture and Children Program, in 2013 she received the Plečnik Medal for her contribution to the enrichment of architectural culture. As part of her research, she is primarily interested in the revitalization of urban and rural settlements within the paradigm of sustainable development.
