The Kranj School of Music has a rich tradition, as it was founded in 1909 on the initiative of the Kranj reading room. After the Second World War, the number of departments increased greatly, a choir, an accordion orchestra and several chamber groups were founded, and the number of performances outside Kranj also increased. In recent decades, many students and teachers have contributed to the recognition and a good reputation of the music school in the domestic and European area. Due to the lack of space, in 2020 the City of Kranj decided to renovate the building of the former construction school in the old town of Kranj. It was abandoned for more then 20 years. The school of music shares the renovated building with the ballet school and Public fund for cultural activities (JSKD). City of Kranj renovated the building completely, it consists of four floors. The ground floor consists of JSKD and a musical preparatory school for the youngest. The space of JSKD includes workshops, offices and a kitchenette. On the ground floor there are also toilets and an elevator that leads to the 2nd floor. There are changing rooms and toilets on the mezzanine, two ballet classrooms and two classrooms for music lessons on the first floor. On the 2nd floor, there are also two music classrooms, one classroom for individual lessons and a hall for a 60-member orchestra.
