Stenger2 Architekten und Partner

Stenger2 Architects and Partners is an architectural practice based in Bavaria, Germany, specializing in adaptive reuse, transformation of existing buildings, and the development of innovative solutions under complex regulatory and technical conditions. Our work integrates architectural design, strategic planning, regulatory expertise, and technical consulting into a holistic approach tailored to the specific challenges of each project.

We believe that existing buildings are invaluable repositories of history, materials, craftsmanship, and cultural memory. Rather than replacing structures through demolition, we seek to unlock their untapped potential and extend their life cycle through thoughtful transformation. From the initial analysis of a building and feasibility studies to permitting procedures and construction, we guide projects through every stage of the process.

A particular focus of our practice lies in projects with demanding legal, technical, and organizational requirements. These include listed buildings, industrial heritage sites, complex changes of use, special occupancy structures, and developments affected by challenging planning regulations or fire safety requirements. By integrating architectural design with regulatory strategy, we create robust and feasible solutions that open opportunities while ensuring compliance and long-term value.

A defining aspect of our work is the concept of “Peeling” (Schälung), developed by Markus Stenger, as a methodology for working with existing structures. Peeling describes the careful and systematic uncovering of physical, historical, and cultural layers embedded within a building. More than a construction technique, it is a process of investigation and knowledge generation. Through the precise reading of the existing fabric, hidden qualities, spatial potentials, and forgotten narratives become visible, creating a sound basis for design decisions. Architecture is therefore not conceived in opposition to the existing building, but emerges from a profound understanding of it.

Another core competence of the practice is fire safety strategy and design in existing buildings. Historic structures, industrial facilities, and adaptive reuse projects frequently require highly individual solutions that reconcile contemporary safety standards with the preservation of architectural character. Our objective is to achieve regulatory compliance while maintaining the identity, atmosphere, and economic viability of each building.

Stenger2 Architects regards architecture as an act of continuation, rather than replacement. Through careful observation, technical expertise, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to the built environment, we transform existing structures into resilient places that connect past, present, and future, while creating lasting value for their users and communities.
