The renovated house is located in the historic centre of Cres, a town on the island of the same name, shaped by a long history from Illyrian, Greek, and Roman times to Venetian rule and modern Croatia. Today, Cres is valued for its preserved heritage, natural beauty, and calm atmosphere.
Over the past two decades, the island became a regular retreat for the clients, who eventually purchased a historic house in 2020 to create a second home for extended stays and remote work. Rather than choosing a new development, they sought a place with character and history.
The project involved the complete renovation of a narrow five-storey house, each floor measuring around 30 m². The design reorganises the layout to include an entrance with storage, multiple bedrooms with bathrooms, a central living floor with kitchen and dining area, and a roof terrace extending the living space.
The original structure was reduced to four stone walls; new timber ceilings, a staircase, and roof were introduced. Restored stone masonry, oak elements, and integrated storage define the interior. Due to irregular geometry and heritage constraints, much of the work required precise on-site adaptation.
The result is a compact yet atmospheric home that balances historical character with contemporary living.
