Housing in Berlin is in limited supply – which makes it all the more important to make sensible use of existing buildings. A single-story residential building from the 1950s on the outskirts of Berlin served as the starting point for this project: The building was modernized as part of an energy-efficient renovation, and expanded by one story.

The result is the creation of two spacious duplex apartments. A clean design language and a subtle color palette create a calm and contemporary overall look. An ecological, yet economical, construction method was combined with high design quality. Renovation and Addition: The ground floor of the existing building was renovated and completely rebuilt. The addition was constructed on top of the brickwork on the ground floor, using prefabricated wood-sandwich panels, which significantly reduced construction time.

In addition to the advantages during installation, this construction method results in a low weight, which is particularly beneficial for additional floors, and also offers good thermal insulation qualities. The ground floor was given an insulated plaster façade, while the newly constructed upper floor was clad with large-format ceramic façade panels, creating a subtly accentuated distinction between the existing building and the extension. Energy-Efficiency Modernization: A particular focus of the project was on energy optimization.
