Gudmundur Jonsson Arkitektkontor

GUDMUNDUR JONSSON ARKITEKTKONTOR was established in 1987 after winning a Nordic Competition for the Icelandic Concert House.
The list of competitions and works is extensive and contains delegations in 46 competitions, with 37 different prizes as a result. Some of those are 1st and 2nd prices in Nordic Competitions. One of those was the Icelandic Pavilion for the World Expo in Sevilla in ‘94, but Iceland couldn´t afford to delegate at last.

The office has mainly been consisting of approx. 7 architects, but lately operating only by Gudmundur Jonsson. It has mainly specialized in Cultural building/public buildings and some exhibitions there as well.

The work with luxury homes and modern cabins has recently become a specialty as well. The works are published in approx. 50 books, as well as international magazines and on international blogs on architecture.

The most important realized projects are the following:
Norveg Coast Cultural Center, Norway
Hardangervidda National Park Center, Norway,
Amtslibrary in Akureyri, Iceland,
The Viking Ship Pavilion, Reykjanesbær, Iceland
Norsk FjordCentre in Geirangerfjord, Norway
"The Sistership" in Rørvik, Norway
The Ibsen Museum, Oslo Norway
Embassy of Iceland, Washington, USA
Casa G vacation House, south Iceland
Stapi, Culture House expansion and restoration, Reykjanesbær, Iceland
Modern Cabin GJ-9, Bjergøy, Norway and numerous cabins have followed
A Studio Apartment in Reykjavik, Iceland (The Architects own secondary vacation apartment)
Eagles Dream vacation residence in Iceland
Several single family houses

Some of those projects have been awarded National Building Prices for good architecture. Norveg and Casa G have been awarded World Architecture Award prices in UK/England, Norveg Coast Cultural Center was as well nominated to the International price of Architecture Mies Van der Rohe in 2004.

The portfolio/buildings are based partly on rather harsh climates and carried out with a historic interest and interpretation of the culture of its origin. The majority of realized buildings are based on dealing with architecture in nature and architecture relating to nature; this is the main task.

GUDMUNDUR JONSSON ARKITEKTKONTOR has realized projects in Washington, USA (Icelandic Embassy) in Malmø, Sweden (The Icelandic Attached house in the Exhibition Nordform 90) and in Iceland (different cultural projects as well as single houses, vacation house and interior design).
