Concept Design for the Revitalization of the Solkan Quarry: “Mundi Parallel”

Abandoned quarries present a problem, challenge, and opportunity. These terraced, amphitheater-like areas of mineral deposits, often spanning several hectares, remain inaccessible and dangerous to the public even after operations cease. In his master’s thesis, Matic Hlede develops a vision for the revitalization of the Solkan quarry, which is expected to be depleted in the next 28 years. The renovation begins with the event GO 25! – Nova Gorica–Gorizia, European Capital of Culture. Initially, artistic venues and exhibition spaces will inhabit the remarkable industrial heritage of the quarry. The activation of the “non-existent” space is stimulated by the mass attendance at the European Festival of Culture.

In the next phase of revitalization, from 2028 to 2045, gallery spaces will decrease and be replaced by nurseries. The final phase of the quarry revitalization strategy at the foot of Hum will commence after operations completely cease, during which the remaining 35% of the quarry will be rehabilitated. The already grown trees will become raw materials for a wood processing plant operated by a cultural and economic consortium. This decades-long strategy for the renewal of the Solkan quarry addresses a wide range of current issues—from presenting the complex history of both border towns, reusing and recycling existing built structures, preserving industrial heritage, maintaining the wood industry and carpentry, to the question of enjoying culture today and its placement in space.

Matic Hlede’s master’s work on the revitalization of the Solkan quarry expresses original creativity. The project offers a youthful and exceptional vision for a better world that combines the preservation of industrial heritage, the promotion of sustainable development, and the creation of new spaces for art and culture.
