The building is located in the northern part of Ljubljana’s inner ring, along Masarykova Street. This radial connection around the city center was created following the example of Vienna, where it represents a central urban theme. The ring in Ljubljana was designed more than 100 years ago, and it was physically completed just over a decade ago. Public buildings along the southern edge of Masarykova Street are arranged in a coordinated rhythm and scale, defined by Plečnik’s Insurance Palace.
This building establishes the morphological scale, the street line, and the height of the buildings along the street frontage. The design of the Masarykova Residence takes these principles into account, too. In addition to this relationship with the Insurance Palace, we also sought to establish a connection through the shaping of the building volume and its exterior appearance – naturally, with a certain distance, through interpretation, and contemporary design principles. For this reason, the Masarykova Residence has a classically structured, tectonic volume. In designing the exterior of the central part of the building, characterized by a distinctive glass envelope, we aimed to apply the basic compositional principle used in the Insurance Palace.
