The Conduit Chair is a lounge chair made from ½” powder coated conduit with a sling seat. Over the last 30 years, SILLA has designed objects and built-ins for individual clients, as well as site-specific projects. Our chairs are designed to be both comfortable and connected to the places they are intended for, with a consideration of existing light, textures, feels, and attitudes. Designing for a wider public involves a similar focus, within the dynamics of the object itself.
Details are resolved in ways that are more felt than noticed, but define the completed object. The base / legs of the chair were conceived as full 10’ pieces, bent to create the structure of the chair. Leaving the total available length of the material intact was an imposed design factor which acknowledged the origin of the material. Finding the necessary bends and angles produced the final aesthetics of the chair. The seat and back frames are rectangles with offset kicks.
The chair comes together as a series of intersections and parallels between these four pieces. A textile sling hangs on the frame to make up the seat and back of the chair. Mahogany armrests and bronze caps finish out the details. The final version was realized over the course of one year, with numerous iterations in both the sling and the frame.
