In response to strong demand from users for new additions to the irogami brand, we developed a new line of chopsticks and chopstick rests. The first product in the series, the grater, received widespread acclaim both in Japan and internationally for its distinctive form, vibrant colors, and the craftsmanship rooted in Tsubame City – a region renowned for its long-standing metalworking tradition.

Following this success, we received many requests from users who wished to experience more products within the same design philosophy. This led us to focus on “chopsticks” and “chopstick rests”, essential tools that symbolize Japanese food culture. To enhance usability, we also developed a dedicated cleaning brush and an original fabric wrap, creating a cohesive product lineup that expands the irogami world. One of the key challenges was how to reinterpret the chopstick rest within the irogami brand. Through repeated design exploration, we arrived at a form inspired by a gently lifted sheet of paper. Before a meal, the hollow structure holds the chopstick tips like a sleeve; during the meal, it functions as a chopstick rest.

Careful refinement ensured harmony with the chopsticks, achieving both functionality and elegance. We also developed a dedicated brush suited for cleaning the hollow structure. By incorporating a stainless steel core, it ensures hygiene and durability. In addition, a custom fabric wrap was designed to store and carry all components together. This project represents a fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and contemporary design, delivering a new expression of Japanese culture through everyday tools.
