Green Spa – Hotel MalisGarten

Tyrol’s newest five-star hotel lifts the interlocking of design and construction to a new level. The Green Spa Hotel MalisGarten in Zell am Ziller was designed as a pure timber construction, with a consistent focus on the usage of local grown woods. Though being tied to an extremely tight deadline, MEISSL Architects succeeded in generating the highest quality in construction. Only in this way the natural material wood and the positioning as a sustainable, resource – conserving and regionally influenced hotel could be combined without borders. The architectural concept of the wooden hotel was penned by the Italian star architect Matteo Thun. “Wood is the only material with aesthetic and technical durability I know,” says Thun, explaining his enthusiasm for the material’s versatility. In addition to the 35 rooms in six categories, the hotel includes a wellness area with outdoor pool, the restaurant “Wilde Kräuterküche” (Wild Herbal Cuisine), the Gourmet Restaurant “HeLeni” , the bar and patisserie named “Eden” and last but not least, the eponymous garden of around 2.000 m². Reinhard Binder, co-owner of Binderholz Bausysteme GmbH, is explaining the basic idea behind the latest offspring of the ZillerSeasons brand: “For as long as there have been people, they have been building with wood. From the historical point of view, this was one of the first real construction materials.” Even delicate points such as fire protection, staircases and lift shafts ,could be solved by the special planning experts – thanks to professional cooperation including innovative approaches to solutions. A combination with a sophisticated heating and cooling concept using geothermal energy and a pellet heating system, Malis Garten has become one of the most sustainable hotels in the Zillertal. “The flexible possibilities, the short construction time and the ecological advantages, combined with the successful design, clearly speak for a promising future for wood as a building material,” says architect Alexan¬der Meissl, summing up the challenges and advantages of the project.
