Tomaž Ebenšpanger is an architect at SKUPAJ Arhitekti and an Assistant Professor at the University of Maribor’s Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture. As a BIG SEE Nominator, he actively supports emerging architectural talent in Slovenia. In this reflection, Ebenšpanger explores the search for a precise balance between function, form, context, and material—arguing that architectural quality is born from intentional, essential design rather than excess.

I understand the question “What is just enough?” in architecture as the search for the precise balance between function, form, context, and material—where a building fulfills its purpose with clarity and intention, without excess or deficiency. “Just enough” means designing spaces that respond thoughtfully to human needs and environmental conditions, using resources responsibly while creating strong spatial identity. In this sense, architectural quality is not measured by abundance, but by the discipline to achieve maximum meaning, performance, and beauty with carefully considered, essential elements.
