The Ilirija swimming pool, originally built in 1929, was outdated and no longer met modern needs. Ljubljana decided in 1995 to replace it with an Olympic 50-meter pool and additional infrastructure. Unusually, Športni Park Ilirija was built in the city center – a sustainable choice, reducing traffic and highlighting sport’s national importance. The historic connection to Tivoli Park, severed by a 1942 rail line and increased traffic, is being restored with a renewed Baroque entrance from Latterman Avenue, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist access.

The new complex includes a pool, four sports halls, a piazza, café, loggia, terrace, museum, and open spaces. A curved, 12.000 m² roof spans all functions, with a 54-metre steel structure and solar panels for zero energy use. Its spatial design uses daylight, views, and blue accents to create urban atmosphere. Ilirija now serves athletes and the public with sport, culture, and dialogue – right in the city center.
