University of Nicosia ‘Six Towers’ Student Residence

Six Towers acts as a beacon in an urban wasteland. It is intended as a statement for the client, UNIC, whilst providing much needed student accommodation. They rise as six towersfrom a plateau of public facilities, merging to form an articulated presence in the cityscape. A metal volume above further binds the elements. The design presents itself as an entity while turning its focus to deconstructing the monotony of high – rise. Effort has gone into creating a sense of the individual within the wider context of the whole. Angles, slopes, sudden voids, disjointed geometries and towering surfaces all contribute towards forming a compact, bold landmark. Unexpected corners and sudden drops, impressive thresholds and intertwining circulation patterns all serve to stimulate, to charge the required banality of repetition. The site is on the green line that divides the island since 1974. There is a new optimism about both the area the project captures. A bold statemen that rises above the uncertainty seemed appropriate. There is no ambiguity here.
