In the Patissia district of Athens, a 1951 corner building is reimagined through renovation and the addition of three new floors. The intervention respects the existing urban fabric while introducing a contemporary architectural identity. Inspired by Karamanlaki Street and its characteristic setbacks that form transitional “prasia” spaces between public and private life, the new volume is carefully positioned to preserve openness and visual balance. Rather than maximizing construction, the design emphasizes outdoor areas, light, and proportion.
The project embraces contrast instead of uniformity, creating a dialogue between solidity and transparency, structure and fluidity. Perforated metal panels act as a veil, filtering light and softening the mass behind them, generating layered perceptions of concealment and exposure. Original materials such as marble, timber frames, and wooden floors are restored and paired with modern elements to form a timeless composition. The social model of the Athenian polykatoikia evolves to include diverse residences, co-working spaces, a co-living unit, and a shared roof garden. A double skin façade enhances ventilation and privacy, while movable louvers and rotating panels animate the building with shifting light and a subtle kinetic presence.
