With the extension of the Salinarium in Bad Dürkheim, 4a Architekten transformed an aging leisure pool into a contemporary thermal spa and sauna landscape, realized while operations continued. The project redefines the complex architecturally and urbanistically, integrating the new volume sensitively into the spa park setting and the existing indoor and outdoor pools. The architectural introduction is marked by a newly designed entrance area with a wide, cantilevered roof. Its open gesture welcomes visitors and gives the Salinarium a contemporary, distinctive appearance.
Directly connected to the existing building are the new changing areas and a long circulation corridor leading to the thermal spa, offering glimpses into the leisure pool hall. This route bridges the distance between the centrally located entrance and the spa area at the rear. To make the journey engaging and clearly differentiated for bathers, artist Ricarda Mieth was commissioned to design the corridor. The extension unfolds over three levels. Curved geometries generate flowing spaces and intuitive orientation, while generous glazing opens the bathing areas to the park. Sauna, relaxation, and catering zones are vertically layered and extended by outdoor terraces and a sauna garden, dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior. Materially, the spa adopts a restrained, timeless language: timber, exposed concrete, and ceramic finishes in muted tones create a calm atmosphere, supported by precise lighting.
