“Kide” marks the 30th anniversary of the Wood Program. The design-build project created an outdoor event space in Kuhmo, Finland, a town known for timber architecture, forest industries, and music festivals. The canopy structure gracefully rests on two corners, lightly touching the ground. Inspired by snow’s fractal geometry, “Kide” is defined by a sequence of eight interwoven, mechanically connected trusses.
The glulam trusses were prefabricated at the Aalto University workshop and assembled on-site. A translucent metal mesh reveals the intricate wood structure, while a roof of LVL elements adds strength. An elevated pine stage creates a welcoming space for performances and markets. Since its completion, Kide has revitalized Kuhmo’s central square, hosting music, dance, and public events. The project promotes sustainability through durable, bio-based materials, minimizing environmental impact while enhancing community life.
