Nominator: Tomas Zdvihal

Nominator's statement

David Budil represents a new generation of architects who approach sustainability as a spatial and systemic design challenge rather than a purely technical issue. His award-winning diploma project, Circular Centre Plzeň, developed at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) under the supervision of Miroslav Šik, explores circularity as an architectural and urban concept, proposing a new typology that integrates production, housing, and public life within a framework of material reuse.

Alongside his academic work, he serves as a teaching assistant at the Císler–Pazdera studio at the Faculty of Architecture at CTU in Prague, contributing to the development of a new generation of architects. He also collaborates with the studio Svobodová Blaha, known for its consistent success in architectural competitions.

THE CIRCULAR CENTRE PILSEN

The Circular Centre Pilsen redefines a traffic intersection as a circular urban infrastructure, reconnecting fragmented parts of the city and embedding principles of reuse into its spatial and structural logic. The compact building is organized around a central hall and constructed from a modular system of reused concrete elements, railway tracks, and locally sourced components. Designed for adaptability and disassembly, it operates as a long-term material system rather than a fixed object. The project reduces embodied carbon by approximately 90% while maintaining economic viability. Combining reuse, production, housing, and public programs, it acts as a new urban forum for the circular economy.

DAVID BUDIL

His diploma project investigates circular infrastructure through the reuse of building components and adaptable structural frameworks. He is interested in architecture as a material practicem, combining constructive logic, spatial clarity, and a contemporary reinterpretation of structural expression.
