Onella, meaning “light,” is an earthen residence on the outskirts of Hosur, Tamil Nadu, set within a community restoring barren land into a native forest. Designed by Team Bhutha, the home embraces natural light, air, and landscape, offering a calm retreat from urban life. Circular forms, varied volumes, and layered roofs create fluid, interconnected spaces.
The design balances built and open areas, framing views while ensuring thermal comfort through orientation and mud concrete west walls. A rustic stone entrance leads to a circular living space with jali walls, followed by a dining area that merges indoors with nature through large arched windows. Wooden elements connect levels, while upper spaces feature open, light-filled rooms. Bedrooms explore varied roof forms, and the master suite opens to green views.
Natural materials – terracotta, Kota stone, lime plaster, and reclaimed wood – enhance warmth. Pet-friendly nooks and eco-conscious design make the home serene, functional, and sustainable.
