Podenhaus – Transformation of a Historic House / Architecture is created in dialogue with place, people, and material. The Podenhaus shows how careful architectural restraint can extend the life of a 550-year-old, listed building while opening it to contemporary living. Located beside the parish church in Bad Aussee’s historic center, the building contains a late-Gothic core and had not undergone substantial renovation since the 18th century. The project revitalizes the monument through eleven residential units, technical upgrades, and careful restoration.
Original masonry, timber ceilings, floors, and the impressive 15th-century roof structure were preserved and repaired, with structural reinforcement applied only where necessary. New interventions are concentrated within kitchens and bathrooms, allowing the historic spatial structure to remain clearly legible. A shared Bel Étage with kitchen, dining area, and fireplace forms the social center of the building. Working with the existing fabric and traces of time, the project reconnects the historic building to contemporary life.
