Out of Order is an innovative, ultra lightweight luminaire designed by the interdisciplinary design studio BCXSY (Amsterdam), in collaboration with light-design studio Atelier Robotiq (Rotterdam). The core philosophy behind the design centers on the role of robots in modern industry. While robots are valued for their reliability and ability to perform repetitive, flawless tasks, Out of Order imagines a scenario where a “flawless worker” begins to slack off, lose interest, or drift into a daydream. It visualizes the transition from strict, robotic order to a disordered structure, as if the machine has developed a mind of its own.

The cylindrical mesh surface is made of industrial yarns, wound by a robotic arm, hardened by bio-based resin in various colors. Inside the structure, a specially-developed, dimmable LED tube is suspended by custom-made brass and stainless-steel components. The defining feature of the light is the gradual transition of its weave. While the pattern starts as a perfectly ordered grid, it eventually warps and deviates. This is achieved through a specially developed algorithm that instructs the robot to intentionally stray from its programmed course. Because these randomized distortions are never the same, each lamp produced becomes a unique artwork.

The result is a luminaire that appears as a frozen moment of mechanical rebellion. The interplay of the rigid, mathematical start and the chaotic, organic finish creates a captivating visual tension, casting intricate, layered shadows when illuminated. The project successfully transforms a technological process into a poetic exploration of free will and individuality.
