The Rainbow Schoolhouse is an “educational learning place” for children who need special educational support. Unlike a traditional special needs school, the children here do not spend their entire school time, but rather, take a break from their regular school. Here, the children receive special attention and intensive educational support. The learning environment is set up for children from grade 1 to grade 10.
The property is located in the area of the large school center in Warendorf. Here, there are various high schools, a secondary school, and a vocational school center. The school building is designed like a small town. In the middle is the forum, the “marketplace”. The square serves as a meeting point and can be used for playing, etc. Directly adjacent is the kitchen and the dining area. The children cook here together with the educators. Next to the two-story forum are the “streets”, hallways that lead to the individual work, craft, and study rooms. The rooms are like individual houses, providing the children with places to retreat. The special feature of the spatial concept is the “semi-transparency”. The rooms are designed with their glazing in such a way that the teachers have a clear view, yet the children do not feel observed. »The building is actually an additional educator«, said the school principal, Ms. Haas.
