H Arquitectes, Spain

The architectural studio H Arquitectes in Barcelona was founded in 2000. It is run by four partners, architects David Lorente Ibáñez, Josep Ricart Ulldemolins, Xavier Ros Majó, and Roger Tudó Galí.

David Lorente Ibáñez and Josep Ricart Ulldemolins, along with their partner architects, make it clear that they calmly accept a theoretical view of architectural creation. They do not try to run their office in terms of clients and projects as such, but in accordance with certain fundamental architectural values and working methods. Nor do they give preference to any particular construction method. Nevertheless, they are interested in sustainable architecture and construction.

They call this attitude a “system of renunciation” and it forms the core of their professional activity. They say that working in a group is only possible in terms of personal renunciation. The office’s activities are based on simple passive systems that are effective with the active support of the participating user.

They believe in low-tech architecture that is simple and easy to build, which does not strive for revolutionary innovations, but rather attempts to consolidate the deeply rooted positive values of architectural and construction heritage. They are convinced that sustainability is not a new paradigm, but a way of working based on common sense, not as an end goal, but simply as a different way of building.

Ibáñez and Ulldemolins strive to connect space, utility, and structures, creating identical, interchangeable spaces whose flexibility is based on the user’s relationships and interpretations, rather than on established technology.
