Andreas Rumpfhuber
Expanded Design, Austria
Dr. Andreas Rumpfhuber is an architect and architectural theorist who lives and works in Vienna. He focuses on new forms of living and working. He runs the architecture firm Expanded Design, where he works on international research projects and workshops, and consults on architectural projects and studies, particularly in the field of (public) housing.
Andreas Rumpfhuber’s texts, books, and lectures are critical and theoretical reflections on central themes of work and living. With these works, he intervenes in social discourse, communicating and raising awareness. With his texts, Andreas Rumpfhuber continuously contributes to the opening up of architecture — both within the discipline itself and beyond the imaginary boundaries of disciplines — with key concepts that enable discussion of political, social, and economic conditions. Among other things, he and his collaborator (Michael Klein) published the book “Modelling Vienna. Real Fictions in Social Housing” in 2014. The book focuses on public and subsidised housing construction in Vienna.
In the design process, his office Expanded Design draws on theoretical and historical knowledge, reveals both explicit and implicit knowledge about organizations, and develops artistic and research solutions that can survive the challenges posed by life and work in contemporary architecture. Theory and concrete design tasks are dialectically linked in his practice; the work of Andreas Rumpfhuber and his office Expanded Design are not in conflict with each other. The impulse liberated through this connection enables the users of the spaces to connect with each other.
He teaches internationally, having lectured at AA London, ETH Zurich, KTH Stockholm, among others. He was a professor at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts in Kiel and at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. He is currently a guest professor at TU Vienna, Institute of Urban Design.
