From Local Roots to Global Impact: How Our Region Shapes Design

Every design emerges from a specific context – from the space, history, culture, and materials available. These local foundations often give products their character, authenticity, and uniqueness that cannot simply be transplanted elsewhere. In a globalized environment, where the risk of generic solutions is ever-present, the question of identity becomes even more important: how can designers draw from local sources without being limited to tradition, and instead transform it into something contemporary and universally understood?

The round table will explore how the cultural and historical contexts of a region influence design practices, and how local materials, crafts, and ways of life provide a foundation for innovation. Special attention will be given to how designers can build a bridge between heritage and contemporary global challenges – from sustainability and digitalization to adaptability to shifting user needs.

Speakers will share experiences showing that local identity is not a limitation but an advantage in creating products that stand out on the international market. The discussion will also address how to preserve authenticity at a time when global competition encourages standardization, and how a region can become a source of inspiration and recognition rather than merely a peripheral player in the global design industry.
