While capsule machines are convenient and deliver consistently high-quality coffee, they also have a significant environmental impact. To address this, Lavazza developed a fully capsule-free system, allowing users to enjoy real Italian espresso sustainably and conveniently.
Tablì, Lavazza’s new single-serve system, revolutionizes coffee preparation with coffee tabs instead of capsules: no aluminium, no plastic, no coatings – just 100% ground coffee. Tabs are packaged in cardboard boxes, with 12 tabs per box on two paper pulp trays. The specially designed Tablì machine, created by Lavazza’s in-house design team, ensures easy tab insertion and seamless coffee preparation.
Sustainability was central to the design process. Energy consumption, life cycle assessment, and noise levels were carefully considered, and post-consumer recycled plastics are used wherever possible without compromising aesthetics or perceived quality. Screws are accessible, and hydraulic and electrical components are neatly separated.
The user experience introduces innovative features, such as a slider with integrated UI, where a simple gesture opens the tab insertion area, and the machine handles the rest, delivering a perfect espresso every time.
Presented at Milan Design Week, the Tablì system represents a major step toward reducing the environmental footprint of single-serve coffee, combining innovation, sustainability, and the pleasure of authentic Italian espresso.
