From two over-200-year-old Biedermeier houses – a dilapidated inn and a vintner’s house – and two unfinished buildings from the 1980s, a project with deep historical roots was born. The site is rich in history, tied to the legend of Agnes of Waiblingen, the namesake of the nearby Agnesgasse. According to the tale, her veil was caught by the wind during a hunt, and at the spot where it landed, the Stift Klosterneuburg was built. Close by lies the legendary Agnesbrünnl, where the forest fairy Agnes is said to haunt. Her likeness, which once adorned the former inn, now marks the entrance to the project.
As the houses began to collapse during the initial phase of work, complete demolition became necessary. This was followed by a faithful reconstruction of the historic façade, preserving the character of the original structures. The reconstruction achieved a 90% improvement in energy efficiency, a full transition to renewable energy, and a seamless integration of history with modern technology, including solar panels and geothermal energy.
