Concept Design for the Creative Hub of Nova Fužine within the Vision of Ljubljana as a Polycentric City

In her master’s thesis, Gaja Golob addresses current urban problems in Ljubljana. The overcrowding of the historical center, centralization of the urban scene, relocation of activities to the outskirts, inefficiency of public transport, and dispersed urban structure serve as the foundation for a proposal for (re)urbanization of Ljubljana based on the principles of a polycentric city. As a basis for establishing this, the author proposes a model for public transport renewal that includes the intertwining of railway, tram, and bus networks. She identifies degraded areas near the public transport network as potential sites for the redistribution of activities and the introduction of a mixed program, thus presenting the possibility of densifying Ljubljana within its borders.

In her project, the author focuses on one of the newly created hubs. In Nove Fužine, she enhances the existing qualities of the broader area through a thoughtful selection of new programs and addresses perceived deficiencies. The newly established neighborhood center aims for local self-sufficiency by providing new jobs, cultural content, a marketplace, and various community spaces. The author’s design approach to urban and architectural planning reflects her sensitivity to recognizing and enhancing the identity of the place. This, along with her complex, analytical-strategic approach to the task, certainly reflects the qualities of a Perspective nominee.
