The market area in Biograd was neglected and largely unknown to visitors, hidden behind the existing, street-facing fish market building with narrow and unnoticeable access points. This proposal seeks to integrate the market into the urban fabric by removing the existing building, reconnecting the space with the city, and inviting interaction.
The new fish market is relocated deeper into the plot. Its elliptical, glass structure enables smoother pedestrian circulation and clearly expresses its function, replacing an inadequate and unhygienic facility with a contemporary space. A shared canopy spans the entire site, precisely fitted between existing buildings. A white steel structure unifies the previously fragmented visual context. The canopy integrates rainwater drainage, natural ventilation, and polycarbonate cladding that provides daylight, UV protection, and shade. Microclimatic comfort is improved with assisted air circulation. Columns supporting the canopy also function as lighting elements, creating a floating effect.
Mobile market equipment allows flexible layouts, enabling the space to host various events and form a lively urban environment. By opening the site to the city and introducing a flexible, climate-responsive structure, the project transforms the market into a visible, accessible, and contemporary public space. It redefines the market as an active urban node capable of adapting to everyday use as well as diverse public events.
