3 Questions for GRUPA
Q: Okolo uses a visual language of black aluminum bars and clean lines that repeat across the range. Where did the initial idea come from, and what triggered the start of this new lighting family?
A: There are, of course, certain frameworks that define who we are, but with each new product we like to push ourselves, experiment with new materials and methods that bring fresh energy into the studio. With Okolo, that meant introducing fabric shades for the first time.
The idea really came from a wish to explore a new direction for Grupa in lighting; something that felt lighter and more refined, where a lamp could seem almost weightless, suspended in space, yet still anchored by strong geometry.

“Lamp could seem almost weightless, suspended in space, yet still anchored by strong geometry.”
Q: From your first concept for Okolo, what remained in the final products and what changed during development? Which aspect of the finished collection makes you most proud?
A: The main aesthetic idea, the interplay between firm structure and lightness, has remained at the core of the collection. The concept of seamless construction, present in each design, also stayed true from the very beginning.
During development, we explored different material finishes, shade translucencies, and even some bold colors before finding the right balance. We also had to rethink certain design details to make sure the lamps could be shipped directly to the end user. In the end, we’re most proud of achieving an unified visual language across all typologies, one that feels distinctly Grupa.

The joy comes from watching the collection come to life and knowing it will soon become part of someone’s everyday environment.
Q: With deliveries planned for start of 2026, you are in the final stretch. What are your current concerns and joys as you prepare for launch?
A: Our main concerns right now are ensuring production quality and consistency. With emphasis on handcrafted manufacturing, it’s important that every piece meets our standards. We’re also focused on making sure the materials and finishes translate from prototype to full-scale production without losing their character.
The joy, on the other hand, comes from seeing the collection come to life and from the positive feedback it received at Euroluce 2025. It will be incredibly rewarding to see Okolo on show again in Frankfurt in 2026 — and finally to watch that initial idea become part of someone’s everyday environment.
About OKOLO
The Okolo collection combines airy elegance and minimalist design, and serves as a testament to simplicity and craftsmanship. The combination of clean lines and simple shapes, the translucent shades made of fabric, and precision-machined aluminium bars creates a coherent statement of subtle refinement.
The Okolo collection features six different designs – a floor lamp, a table lamp, two wall-mounted versions, and pendant lamps in two sizes. Okolo’s main theme is the interplay of effortless lightness and firm structure. With no conspicuous support elements and seamless construction Okolo seems light, as if suspended in space.
Inspired by movement and form, Okolo offers a soft and diffused type of glow which creates a special and subtle ambience, and its seamless design blends pure uncluttered functionality with weightless beauty and refinement.

Grupa is a Croatian design studio and lighting brand founded by Filip Despot, Ivana Pavić and Tihana Taraba. As a studio, they have collaborated for many years with numerous regional furniture manufacturers, and their projects have been recognized and awarded in Croatia and abroad.
In 2012 Grupa reached a new milestone as they stepped out of the design role and went into manufacturing, launching a line of their own Grupa-designed lighting products which blend their design philosophy, heritage, and the tradition of handmade techniques honed by local craftsmen.
Since then, Grupa’s collections have been sold worldwide – from North America and Europe to Asia and Australia.
