The Challenge
Architects Collective took on the challenge of reconstructing and expanding the rehabilitation center for the Railway and Mining Union in Bad Schallerbach, Upper Austria. Their goal was to transform an old, uninviting structure into a welcoming, relaxing, and sustainable facility.
Therapy and Recreation
In the midst of a spacious park, surrounded by ancient trees, Architects Collective constructed a two-story therapy space alongside the picturesque Trattnach River. The facility can accommodate up to 124 guests, with each room featuring a private balcony for patients to find solace. The project’s primary objective was to create a building that seamlessly combined medical functionality with the amenities of a hotel resort, all while prioritizing energy efficiency and healthcare innovation.
High Standards and Improved Efficiency
The new design emphasized the integration of natural light and the use of high-quality materials, including oak, rubber, and slate, ensuring that the renovated building is well-equipped for the future. Key elements of the revitalized structure include a state-of-the-art therapy pool and spa, complemented by outdoor therapy areas featuring extended wooden terraces adorned with herbs and flower beds along the riverbanks. This “klimaaktiv” certified project has established new benchmarks in sustainability, energy efficiency, and healthcare innovation. It stands as a model for future renovation projects throughout Austria.
