The metro station San Pasquale is located in the Chiaia district on Mergellina Bay in Naples. The surface-level exits are part of an open square design, which is mirrored by a building that extends five storeys below sea level. Austrian artist Peter Kogler designed the full height and width of the side walls with a three-dimensional, fluid motif in shades of blue.
Thanks to various artistic interventions, the underground stations of the Metropolitana di Napoli are interconnected, forming the largest art trail in Europe. While the square design is embedded in the urban fabric as an easily accessible island, the hollow space that extends deep underground is enveloped by a metallic shell in the form of a pergola, creating the impression of a protective canopy.
The diverse surface treatments and the polyphonic character of the different materials establish a dialogue between the technologically advanced structure and its historical context, giving the site a distinctive identity.
