Universale: A Textile (R)Evolution

The master’s thesis by Maja Julijana Šket, titled “Universale: A Textile (R)Evolution,” is a conceptual project for the revitalization of the degraded area of the Universale factory in Domžale that goes beyond mere architectural renewal of industrial heritage. The author focuses on the existing textile content instead of a complete program overhaul, while being aware of both global and local issues in the textile industry. She emphasizes sustainable and circular textile practices.

The renovation of the buildings is viewed as an opportunity for the reuse of not only the constructed structures but also for recycling existing elements and materials. Rather than environmentally burdensome demolition, the author proposes a circular construction model based on the dismantling, restoration, and repurposing of existing materials for incorporation into new buildings.

In the urban and architectural design, a significant sensitivity and just the right amount of boldness can be recognized in the author’s approach. The design of outdoor spaces responds to the surroundings, facilitating the integration of the textile center into the network of existing urban connections. The content is organized to create three thematic pathways: textile, educational or professional, and public or experiential.

The author systematically approaches the renovation of the buildings, examining existing structures through the lens of three categories based on cultural and conservation significance, recognizability, static adequacy, and functionality or preservation. The interventions follow this categorization, ranging from minimal to larger-scale actions, with the latter being designed in an extremely sensitive yet clear and authorial manner. As the author states, “It is time for a step toward better practices,” as her project undoubtedly reflects a much-needed new perspective in today’s context.
