Deadstock, or stagnant inventory, is a widespread issue in the building materials industry – both in Hong Kong and globally. Our studio saw this as an opportunity to address an environmental challenge through design innovation. We uncovered a forgotten stockpile of intricately patterned laminate panels, once popular from the 1970s to the 1990s, that had been left in storage for nearly three decades. With manufacturing having moved to China, these panels were at risk of being discarded into landfills.
Instead, our team repurposed them with creativity and care. Over ten weeks, we transformed the panels into bespoke mosaic flooring by crushing them into chips. To ensure anti-slip properties and water resistance, we employed cementitious binding, a chemical sealant, and off-site fabrication techniques.
The resulting flooring is the centerpiece of the design, its visual richness enhanced by textured blue walls inspired by the original laminate colors. Structural columns on-site were extended to form a vaulted ceiling, crafting a space that feels both cozy and expansive. At the core, a grand central basin anchors the layout, subtly guiding movement and creating a sense of flow throughout the interior.
