The task was to construct a new apartment building for a group of 12 parties in a new development area in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim. In the “Villa Pillebach”, no two apartments are alike, as each one is specially adapted to the needs of its owners. Despite this individuality of the builders and their residential units, the result is an ensemble that appears uniform from the outside.
The three-story building has two atriums, which can be understood as two incisions in the volume. These incisions, which create a meander in the structure, allow the adjoining apartments to be illuminated on three sides. The interior access, to which all apartments are connected, is via a large central corridor, staged as a “play street”. Furthermore, the room layout includes a two-story common room, which can also be used as a guest apartment.
