Yueji 悦己 positions cultural activation as a design catalyst, transforming the long-suspended 100 Ordos Development into purposeful spaces for contemporary tourism. Sited on an island beside a natural lake, the project is reprogrammed as a flagship bookstore and library that cultivates a distinctive brand narrative while remaining grounded in local context.
The design juxtaposes existing stark red brick patterns with custom, illuminating, frosted glass bricks featuring filleted edges, evoking the notion of “enlightenment through reading”. A linear “walk of knowledge” abstracts the experience of traversing the open Inner Mongolian grasslands, while continuous skylights pull blue-sky daylight deep into the space, extending enlightenment into a spatial journey. Recycled, non-formaldehyde strawboards mimic the texture of book pages and are applied to 7-meter-high claddings, floating platforms, and stepped seating. Accents of Yves Klein Blue animate reflective stainless-steel framing and shelving, enriching the interior atmosphere. Reading is spatialized through customized bookshelves of varied ergonomic dimensions that integrate with the existing architectural fabric.
