Tella Thera interprets Mediterranean hospitality through an architectural language rooted in tradition and sustainability. Situated outside Chania, Crete, the project explores how cultural memory and contemporary design converge, creating a model where architecture serves as shelter and a medium for environmental, sensory, and emotional renewal.
Set on an olive-clad hillside overlooking the Aegean, the hotel unfolds through a rhythmic composition of full and half arches, abstracted from Venetian and Ottoman geometries, translating Chania’s historic essence into light, texture, and tranquility. Interior surfaces of hand-applied microcement, tinted with Cretan mineral pigments, create a continuous, immersive, cave-like environment. Almost every room opens onto outdoor spaces of water, plants, lime mortar, and local gravel, forming tranquil microclimates that dissolve the boundary between architecture and landscape. Courtyards and terraces invite slower inhabitation, echoing the island’s balance between human craft and nature.
The design was refined through full-scale prototypes, material tests, and environmental simulations, ensuring each surface, opening, and detail responds to light, air, sound, and thermal comfort. Beyond architecture, Tella Thera emphasizes a holistic experience: locally sourced cuisine, collaborations with artisans, and spaces for yoga and meditation reinforce well-being as spatial and cultural. Hospitality is framed as participation, belonging, and renewal.
Guided by eco-emotionality, the project integrates passive cooling, natural ventilation, and microclimatic shading, while restoring olive groves and native flora. The living landscape enhances biodiversity, regulates microclimate, and redefines luxury as care, allowing architecture and terrain to merge over time. Slow, intimate, and regenerative, Tella Thera offers contemporary hospitality deeply rooted in place, where authenticity, simplicity, and sensory depth celebrate the timeless landscape of Crete.
