This is a renovated mansion perched on a hill overlooking the sea. The rich nature of Yakushima is ever-changing, each moment revealing delicate beauty. Light reflects as if bleeding through the glossy ribbed panels and glass, drawing the shifting scenery into the interior. You can enjoy the view directly from the window, as well as the changing colors and light through the seasons and time – the twinkling stars at night, and the natural wind and sounds resonating throughout the house – as if “observing” nature itself.
The Japanese-style room, featuring rare Yakusugi alcove pillars and coffered ceilings, has been reupholstered with charcoal gray tatami, mirroring the blues of the sea and sky. When the old lighting fixtures were removed, white, untouched boards were revealed; the surrounding discoloration appeared as art created by the passage of time. By placing a vase resembling a full moon in the space, I hoped to draw attention to the beauty we often overlook.
This home offers a new way to engage with nature – sharpening our senses and revealing a quiet, profound richness. Living in harmony with nature guides us toward a more sustainable way of life.
