Renovation Salzburg State Theatre

The Salzburg State Theatre has been in operation since 1839. In 2022, both the audience and stage areas were renovated and technically upgraded. The renovation was carried out in close coordination with the client, the Federal Monuments Office, and the responsible authorities.

The goal of the renovation was to implement a cohesive overall concept that meets the legal, technical, and architectural needs of today, while respecting the historical structure. The diverse requirements of a multi-divisional theatre in terms of acoustics, stage technology, and lighting were viewed as an opportunity and executed in such a way that each division now enjoys optimal conditions.

One of the biggest challenges was the construction timeline of just under half a year for restoring and modernizing the auditorium and stage technical areas. The geometry and entrances of the balcony tier were redesigned and rebuilt. New seating, along with improved ventilation, ensures better seating comfort and optimized sightlines. The wall and ceiling surfaces, including the stucco, were extensively reworked. In particular, the upper machinery on stage was electrified.
The true scale of the work – completed in 189 days from demolition to brushstroke – is often overshadowed by the impression that everything must have always been this way.
