About ReVærk Architecture
ReVærk is an architectural practice and materials development workshop based in Aarhus, Denmark.
Brought up in an architectural tradition of thinking form before materials, ReVærk does the exact opposite — focusing on materials, tectonics, and details before form. In doing so, they practice and encourage a more holistic approach to building physics.
Whether working with new buildings or architectural transformations, their projects are approached with knowledge and understanding of building culture and historical material practices, which become an integral part of design, detailing, and execution. Often finding inspiration in vernacular architecture and sound building principles that seem to be forgotten in modern construction, they live by the mantra: “Looking back in order to move forward.”
Regardless of program or scale, the ambition is to create built environments with a strong material presence and aesthetic expression, emphasizing biogenic and earthen materials chosen for their minimal environmental impact, excellent physical properties, and contribution to a healthy indoor climate.
Passionate about natural, low-intervention materials, the studio was founded with a love for rammed earth and a desire to explore unfired earthen material practices. Building with earth has been a central part of their oeuvre — from temporary pavilions in the early years to increasingly larger permanent structures in the making.
As part of the multidisciplinary R&D project The Clay Alliance, ReVærk is at the forefront of earthen construction in Denmark. With a tireless ambition to push the boundaries of earthen construction, they seek to break legislative barriers through documentation, expand knowledge within relevant professions by demonstrating built references, and lower costs with the aid of robotic manufacturing.
Whether developing new earthen and biogenic materials or finding innovative applications for recycled materials, R&D is becoming an increasingly significant part of their workshop-based practice — always aiming to push the frontiers of sustainable building culture.
