“Adama – ἐν τῷ ἅμα (together). ”
The complex is located in the seaside village of Matala, on the southern coast of Crete, embraced by the area’s distinctive rock formations that naturally enclose the plot. The starting point of the design was the creation of a cluster of small buildings, oriented around a shared courtyard, recalling the protected square of a small village. In clear reference to the values and heritage of being together and communal life in Matala, Adama redefines the traditional Greek island neighborhood, translating it into a contemporary hospitality project.
The volumes are arranged to offer privacy to residents, while at the same time encouraging coexistence and interaction within the communal square. Their relationship generates a sequence of open and enclosed living spaces with varying qualities – some intimate and private, others collective and shared. Access to the complex is through a courtyard gate on the southern side of the property, an architectural gesture rooted in the Cretan vernacular. Around the main courtyard, one finds the entrances to the individual apartments. Each leads to a private patio with its own pool, opening toward views of Matala’s iconic cliffs. Exterior staircases link the upper-level apartments with the communal meeting area at ground level, reinforcing the fluid transition between public and private realms.
