Josip Vuljanić, Croatia

Nominator: Danijela Domljan

Nominator's statement

Josip Vuljanić is an exceptionally creative and persistent young enthusiast, a graduate student of the Master's degree program in Wooden Product Design at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, University of Zagreb.

By designing wooden washbasins, Josip embarked on an exploration of possible shapes and constructions of an ecological and sustainable product, respecting traditional utility values, construction and production parameters, ergonomic guidelines, environmentally sustainable materials, and final coatings. Josip's persistence in creating variations of incredible and complex design-technological prototypes demonstrates his knowledge not only of "beautiful" solutions that evoke emotions, but also of potential risks that he seeks to structurally and technologically eliminate.

Wooden washbasins demonstrate good product design that can leave a significant cultural-conceptual social imprint with their use. Therefore, I believe that it deserves a nomination in the product design category.

SINK 1

The washbasin is made of light-colored wood, with clearly visible grain patterns that give it a natural and unique look. The surface is smoothly finished, and the shape is a slightly irregular, organically rounded design that resembles a bowl. It is composed of several carefully joined wooden segments, which creates an interesting mosaic of patterns.

SINK 3

This washbasin exudes the warmth of natural material and hand-crafted craftsmanship, ideal for interiors that want to emphasize the combination of modern design and natural elements.

JOSIP VULJANIĆ

I am a 5th year student of wood technology at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology in Zagreb. I was born in Karlovac, and I live in a village near Karlovac. Since I was a child, I have been involved in the work in the family carpentry shop, which is where my love for wood was born, and the reason why I am here today. In the carpentry shop, we have always made the usual carpentry products: windows, doors, cabinets, kitchens, and the like. That is why I wanted to produce something unusual, something where wood is not usually used as a material.

In Karlovac I attended the Karlovac Forestry and Carpentry School, where my interest in wood and wood products increased. It was there that I first came up with the idea of making a wooden sink, which is why many people looked at me a little strangely and listened in disbelief to my ideas about the serious production of such objects, due to the hygroscopicity and anisotropy of wood. When the time came to move from idea to action, that is, to make the first prototype of the sink (my final thesis), I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which at first discouraged me a little. After half a year of treatment, when I had recovered a little, with the help of my colleagues, I made the first prototype of the sink that was designed and constructed in the hospital, which is an additional interesting thing.

When I left the hospital, I successfully made it in the workshop and presented it at the final exam, which resulted in everyone's enthusiasm. Since then, I have been constantly researching the production process of washbasins and wooden bathtubs, their surface protection and their presence on the market. For a few years now, I have been going to Milan for a fair with my faculty, where I follow the shapes and presence of materials used in bathtubs and washbasins, where there is almost no wood at all. My vision is to introduce wood as a normal material for bathroom furniture and for bathrooms to become natural oases where wood plays with various shapes and gives a touch of innovation and luxury.

My family has been a great support on my journey, supporting me from all sides and allowing me to realize every idea I have. I make it in real form in our workshop. Therefore, my task is not limited to designing a product design solution, but its entire manufacturing process, and assessing the possibility of its manufacture on a CNC machine. So in each of my products I am a designer, constructor, programmer and carpenter because for each product I need to prepare wood. The multitude of tasks involved in making a washbasin is sometimes quite difficult to connect, but if done with love, they become a pleasure.

My vision is to one day create a series of wooden bathroom furniture that will decorate the most luxurious bathrooms on the market, it is a process that is going very slowly, but I believe that soon I will not see my prototypes in the workshop but in real application and use, because the design is not finished until someone uses the product.
