Railway/Bus/Bike Station Wampersdorf

Seamless Transitions Between Modern Infrastructure and Rural Surroundings

Wampersdorf Station is a key stop along the Pottendorfer rail line, which connects Vienna’s city center with its suburban outskirts. Designed as a multimodal Highline Station, it integrates rail, bus, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic into a unified, inviting structure – promoting a new culture of public transport and active mobility.

The station features barrier-free access, short transfer routes between bus and train, two new elevators, weather-protected platforms, a bright underpass, and tactile guidance systems to ensure inclusivity for all users. As a busy cycling route crosses the railway tracks, it was thoughtfully incorporated into the underpass. Special attention was given to maintaining clear and separate flows for cyclists and pedestrians to ensure safety and ease of movement.

Architecturally, the station is defined by its distinctive zigzag folded reinforced concrete roofs. These hover lightly over the retaining walls and are angled to create visual connections between the forecourts and the platforms. The exposed concrete surfaces are sandblasted and finished in a warm yellow-red hue, echoing the tones of the surrounding landscape.

The choice of materials, their colors, and the characteristic light of the region all contribute to the architecture’s impact, reinforcing the seamless integration of this modern, multimodal hub into its rural environment.
