Viktor Kaplan Primary & Middle School, on Andritz’s main square in Graz, dates to the 1960s. A 2014 competition win led to two stages: a primary extension (2016) and phase two (design: 2021, completed: 2024), adding a sports / event hall with foyer / support, a kitchen with dining hall, accessible circulation, and caretaker/ waste facilities.
Inside, extra classrooms and group rooms, a teaching kitchen, and a music room were created. Construction is mainly timber on concrete slab / footings or basement. Green roofs (except ancillary) manage heat and rainwater; shed roofs and north glazing add daylight. Concrete is limited to foundations, a precast lift, and targeted structures.
A dining hall links both schools; the sports hall completes the ensemble.
Stained-timber façades; interiors emphasize timber and exposed CLT.
Accessibility: tactile guidance, re-graded yard, new circulation.
