Simon Ewings
Snøhetta AS, Norway
Snøhetta is an architectural studio based in Oslo, Norway, and New York, USA. It has been organized this way since 1989, when it won first prize in a competition for a new library in Alexandria, Egypt, against more than 500 architects from around the world. Simon Ewings is a project manager and senior architect at the company. The office is located in its own building, which was once a warehouse on the banks of the harbor in Oslo. The tranquility of the location and the open floor plan of the premises encourage collaboration and facilitate communication and the exchange of experiences. This is put to good use by more than 120 employees of 17 different nationalities. The employees are deliberately mixed in terms of gender and age.
Snøhetta has gained a reputation for maintaining strong links between landscape and architecture in all its projects. It advocates the idea of teamwork throughout the entire creative process. The company is multidisciplinary, with architects, landscape architects, interior designers, and industrial designers working side by side with artists and engineers.
As Ewings says, in practice they strive to find design solutions that are both ecologically efficient and aesthetically pleasing, with the goal of achieving “good growth,” i.e., spaces that are empirical, restorative, and attractive. They create accessible dwellings adapted to the local culture, climate, and ecosystem. Ewings emphasizes that continuous research and advanced technology are key tools in creating financially viable sustainable designs.
