Erik Petrus Architects
Erik Petrus Architects is an international architectural studio based in Prague, led by architect, urban planner, and theorist Erik Petrus. Since 2017, the office has been active in both the Czech Republic and Indonesia, designing buildings across a wide range of scales - from detailed interiors to extensive urban developments. Its projects include residential, commercial, cultural, civic, and sacred buildings.
The studio creates architecture with a strong atmosphere and emotional depth. Its designs are founded on a unique concept and a deep respect for the local context. They are characterized by original formal expression and a thoughtful approach to geometry, light, and natural materials. Each project is developed individually to precisely match its location, function, and the client's vision. The studio’s work is defined by a synthesis of European architectural tradition with Southeast Asian approaches, which bring sensitive integration into the local environment, careful response to tropical climates, traditional building principles, and a profound respect for local culture. This inspiration is reflected even in projects realized in Europe, where the studio creates works with a distinctive signature based on harmony between interior and exterior and on dramatic use of geometry, light, materials, and spatial atmosphere.
The office places great emphasis on natural and sensorially rich materials - exotic woods, marble, travertine, stone, concrete, or brick - and on creating impressive spaces that evoke emotion. Geometry serves as the primary organizational principle of its designs, which always arise in response to the specific context of the place. Every project is an original that cannot simply be transplanted to another environment.
The studio is grounded in the strong theoretical and research background of its founder.
Erik Petrus is an architect, urbanist, architectural theorist, and university lecturer whose work connects design practice, research, and teaching. He studied architecture at the Faculty of Architecture in Prague and at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, where his experience of the Turkish context significantly shaped his architectural thinking and sparked a lasting interest in intercultural dialogue, spatial perception, and Asian architecture.
After graduating, he worked for several years in the studio of Eva Jiřičná, refining his architectural language. His interest in diverse cultures has led him to design internationally, consistently linking a distinctive architectural approach with local cultural and social contexts. Alongside practice, he is actively engaged in academia. He currently teaches at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, where he founded and leads the course Architecture in Asia. His theoretical work explores how architectural space affects human perception and how spatial concepts evolve across cultures and history.
His research focuses on building typology and sustainable development, particularly townhouses as a form of urban housing, a topic central to his doctoral research. He has taught extensively, organized conferences, collaborated on projects for the Ministry for Regional Development, leads an urban design course at Skvot, lectures worldwide, serves as a jury member of the INSPIRELI Awards, and is an active member of the Art History Society.
